Wardrobe Refashion Pledge

Since Melissa and I have been doing Refashion Fridays (thank you Melissa for participating), we decided to take a the Wardrobe Refashion Pledge for 6 months. The pledge starts Nov. 1 and we are all signed up. Here are the rules:

1.No buying new! (handmade is excepted; So this allows for Etsy purchases etc!!) All clothing must be Recycled, Renovated, Preloved or Thrifted, or Handmade only for the term. Employment related and special needs clothing (ie sports, school), shoes and undies are excepted from the rules, although you are encouraged to have a go at making these.
2.In extreme circumstances, maybe a special event, or the worlds greatest and most amazing never to be repeated sale that you simply can not pass up, you may use the Get out of Refashionista Jail Free card. You are able to use this card once during the 2 month part of your contract; ie 1 for 2 months, 2 for 4 months etc. Of course you need to fess up on the blog and display the button!
3.You must post on the blog at least once a week to let the community know what you've been up to. This will not only give you brag points, but inspire and encourage others! Of course you need to display the button on your blog and have copied the pledge in at least one post, and provide a link to your pledge under the button.
4.You need to be honest and admit when you've fallen off the Refashionista Wagon! Go directly to Refashionista Jail, do not pass GO and do not collect $200! Apply for parole once there.

This is a huge thing for Mamma Tortilla. Please follow us during this awesome 6 month adventure. Basically, come back every Friday for a refashion treat. Off to Goodwill today! I'll post my yummy finds.

Love,

Les:)

Refashion Saturday!

Sorry for the delay on posting but with costume making, parades, dinners and parties.........well, Refashion Friday got pushed to Saturday :) No worries it was worth the wait. Melissa and I did some great stuff this week. I tackled on a tutorial (super cute) and Melissa took a yucky dress and made it into BEAUTY!
Ok, so my refashion is actually my second attempt in trying to make this specific ruffle shirt! One of my favorite blogs that I follow for refashioning amazements is My Mamma Made It. She is always doing some awesome refashions, check her out. So I decided to try out one of her tutorials, for the second time. The first time was a disaster. This time I was very happy with the results:)

DIY Coasters

I had these plain black coasters in my living room that were one of the first things we bought when we got our first apartment. At the time they were cute now they are just boring. I decided that I should update them instead of throwing them away and buying new ones. Loved how they turned out. They were super easy to make. All you need is:

*old coasters (even pieces of cardboard)
*fabric (great project for scraps)
*modge podge (found at your local craft store)
*brush
*scissors

This is a great gift idea since the holidays are coming up!

Clutter Clutter Clutter

C lutter! Before we had kids, I was a cleaning fanatic. There was no clutter in my house (ok maybe a drawer or two) and over the years it's become a little compulsive :) You would have hated to be my roommate in college (ok, I know that my college roommates are reading this and laughing because it's true). Now that we have a family, clutter has crept in my house and decides to stay every once in awhile. All of you mammas know, that the laundry piles up, there dirty dishes in the sink, bathrooms need to be clean, your kids spill something on your white carpet/couches, your drawers look like a tornado came through, and I can go on and on. Lately, not only is it hard to keep up with the daily house chores, I have noticed that we have accumulated CLUTTER! just stuff. pointless stuff.

Since my kids have been sick, Scott and I have been going through the house cleaning and getting rid of stuff. We just finished packing our car up and most of our clutter is on it's way to a donation center. WOW IT FELT SO GOOD TO GET RID OF STUFF! But there is so much left to do especially since there is a huge project underway.

Here at Mamma Tortilla's House, there is a huge renovation going on in my laundry room (my fresh laundry room!). My crafting area is being updated, modernized, organized, and becoming Mamma Tortilla's small oasis. I wasn't going to mention it but I'm getting really excited. It's going to be my creative studio!!!! So here is a sneak peak of where I sneak off to when I sew, blog, do laundry, and have complete zen!

My favorite gift, my desk. Yes, I know the walls are BLAH!

My craft area! Not to exciting but wait until its all done!

Refashion Friday:Tube Top to Bag and Skirt to Apron!

This week I decided to take an old tube top that I had and make it into a bag. I used chocolate brown burlap material for the lining. I used every piece of the tube top for the bag. The handles were also part of the shirt. Love being able to do that. Nothing goes to waste. So here's mine (DONT FORGET TO SCROLL DOWN FOR MELISSA'S REFASHION ITS FABULOUS)

This is what the tube top looked like pre-refashion!

Cutting the fabric out :)

FINISHED PRODUCT!! LOVE IT!
Can't wait to wear it out! or maybe I'll do a giveaway....hmmm.

Melissa took an old skirt and refashioned into a beautiful apron! Maybe I'll convince her that I need it more :) haha. She even did a fabulous tutorial with pictures.

Materials:

1. skirt that I loved that acquired a few stains and that seemed to shrink after pregnancy=)

2. pinking shears - wow didn't need to use these but so much fun!

3. tin full of old buttons

Directions

1. & 2. cut off front panel of skirt.

3. cut two strips for apron ties

4. cut off lining at the top of the ties

5. ironed ties

6. folded ties in half and ironed then sewed down side leaving top and bottom opened

7. & 8. Used safety pin to turn ties right side out

9. Cut 1 1/2 in. off the top of the front panel and then cut off another 5 inches and tossed that strip

10. pinned top strip to the bottom of the skirt (making sure to evenly distribute tucks)

11. pinned ties to side of skirt and sewed down edges

12. sewed random off white buttons to the top strip

13. Mamma wanted vintage...mamma got vintage=)Loved the skirt - adore the apron!

Have A Happy Friday!

Can't Live Without My Sling

So I had to share with everyone the love I have for my sling. I carry Chloe around in it all the time. It's a life saver. She naps, helps mommy do house chores, we hike together in it, and we even play putt putt in it :). You don't know what you are missing if you don't have one already :)
When she was first born we used the sleepywrap for awhile but for me personally it was hard to unwrap all the time and feed her. The girls at my La Leache League meetings would always wear their babies in slings and they were so modern. I had to have one!! I asked one of the girls for directions on a diy sling and also got help from my friend Katie. They gave me an awesome site for how to make slings (check out the site, its great). Since I wear Chloe in her sling all the time now some friends have been asking me to make them one as gifts. The recent one I made was for Baby Savannah and it turned out beautiful :) I had to share.

Mamma Tortilla with Melissa West Photography

I'm really really excited about my first interview here at Mamma Tortilla and I had the pleasure of interviewing an amazing photographer, as well as a dear friend of mine, Melissa West. Its funny how we met really. We were going to the same Birthing Circle meetings and La Leache League meetings in our local area because we were both pregnant at the same time. I found out that she was a photographer and I wanted my pregnancy pictures done. She came to my house and took some fabulous photos. From then on she has taken wonderful pictures of my family and has become a good friend. Our daugthers are two weeks apart and now hang out together for paper eating time (they don't have play dates they eat paper together ...haha).

Sit back, relax and get to know Melissa West.

MT: Ok, so I heard you have a super power: you’re a mom, a wife, very active in your community, you make everything from scratch and you have your own photography business. How do you do it?
MW: Wow! I must admit I do have a few flaws - ha! I'd love to tell you I have it all together and that I have an ultimate planner that holds my life together, but... Well as I sit here answering these questions I couldn't find a pen on my work space - so not totally all together - and I do have a planner but it is on my workspace so...=) I try to put my family first and go from there. My husband does help me and let things slide when I start to lose it. Oh, and you will find a few boxes and canned foods peeking out in my pantry...

MT: What got you started in photography and what made you want to turn it into a business?
MW: My husband and my husband! After teaching for a few years both he and I saw that it was not what would make me happy. It would take too much time from our family. So I began to look for another job (well not too hard!) For our wedding he bought me my first “real” camera. Once we returned home, he kept commenting on the pictures I had taken. I'm not sure how many times he had to encourage me before I took the plunge!

MT: What inspires you when taking pictures of your clients? Do you have a signature style?
MW:I love vintage and I love natural! It is awesome when a parent looks at a photograph and says, “Aww! That is her exactly!” Makes my day.

MT: What has been the funniest session you have had with a client?
MW: Well just today I was chasing 3 boys down a driveway and into a ditch (I'm sure the parents were watching out the window laughing at me - does that count? Oh, and there was the time when I was photographing a wedding and had to run into the dressing room to find the grooms ring - during the service!

MT: I know recently you had the 50/50/50 collection. Tell me more about it and do you have any upcoming collections or projects you are working on?
MW:The 50/50/50 Fine Art Collection will be fifty different babies featured on my blog. Each day a different child will be featured for that day alone. The fine art print will be matted, signed and dated and available for fifty dollars to whomever wishes to have that little bit of sweetness. Parents who volunteer their child may end up seeing the photographs in locations such as pediatrician's offices, birthing centers, or a favorite boutique. The Collection should be ready for display in early Spring of 2010. There are still spots available for babies 0-2 years.
No other collections on the horizon (this one is quite enough to keep me busy at the moment!)

MT: Where do you hope to see Melissa West Photography in five years?
MW:A well run business that lets me spend more time photographing and less time establishing the business end of things.

MT: Who are some of your favorite photographers?
MW:Alicia Caine, Kelly Ryden(one day I will get photos like hers!), Brandy Anderson, Jessica Kettle and Michele Anderson to name a few.

MT: This is probably really hard question to answer but what are some of your favorite blogs?
MW:Mamma Tortilla, of course! Well I love to craft and sew - so a few along those lines: Betz White, Happy Together, One Crafty Place, One Pretty Thing... I could go on forever=) Another blog I love to follow about homemaking/living naturally is Passionate Homemaking.

MT: Do you have any advice for other mammas who want to follow their passion?
MW:Well it helps ALOT if your husband is on board as well. I have been blessed with a very supportive husband. He will give me the time I need to work and then doesn't mind when I stay up late sewing into the wee hours of the morning(he also acts very interested when I show him all my photos that I edit and the projects I work on - ahh I love that man - okay what was the question=) If your passion is business related - research FIRST (I found this out the hard way) then find someone who is already doing it and pick their brain. Then go for it. Treat your customers wonderfully and they will return the favor - my best business is from word of mouth.

MT:When you are not taking some of you amazing photos, what are other things do you like to do?
MW: Love dating my hubby, sewing/crafting, reading, oh and sleep...I really love sleep!

MT: Ok, what are your small pleasures in life?
MW:Browsing Etsy, rows of glass jars (is that strange=), homemade ice cream, a good book, visiting my sisters, craft blogs (those really suck me in)

MT: I know that you love to sew and craft, what are some of things you are working on now?
MW: I just finished a string of lights advent calendar(so cute - www.elsiemarley.com), and I'm in the middle of too many projects. I have project ADD! Slings, diapers, blocks, baby shoes, skirts, apron...
MT: What was one of the first things you ever made? Who taught you how to sew?
MW:My mom and older sisters taught me to sew. I think the first project was curtains - all those straight lines, you can't go to wrong!

MT: Does Bella get a lot of your sewing creations? I'm sure she loves playing with your stuff when you are crafting.
MW: Yeah, I think she enjoys the craft supplies more than the finished crafts! I try to sew when she is sleeping - it is very hard when she is awake and into everything.
I made her a block set that had the letters of her name on them...well, she always bypasses them for the spoons and measuring cups=)

MT: Ok, a little birdie told me you are almost done with your Christmas shopping? You have to tell us how, what, when, where - HOW DO YOU DO IT??
MW:Well that starts with a gigantic love for the holidays=) I start really getting excited about Christmas in September. But I make my list and start shopping the day after Christmas! I also make a large portion of my gifts. With 30 people in my immediate family if I didn't make gifts I think I might be in the poor house=) But, I also love making gifts that mean something and aren't just another toy that will be lost under the bed in a few weeks! And, of course, I always end up doing a few family sessions for Christmas presents.

J'Adore Sewing Books

Right now I am in the process of trying to get a sewing book collection together. I see the holidays/birthday is coming up so maybe I'll drop the hint off to the hubby :) Here's just a few that I would like to have. Let me know what you think of them. Would love to get reviews, if you have read any of them or if you have suggestions of other books you like.

O is for Owl

Since its been cold and rainy :( I've had to find ways to entertain my very active and lovable two year old. I think we were both bored out of our minds. So to get our mind off of rain and being cold ), I decided to make an owl with him while Chloe slept. I got the idea from where ada likes to wonder. Great blog by the way. Instead of using sunflower seeds we used felt and it worked out great. I let him do most of the crafting with my assistance. He was really proud of himself. He placed on the window sill so it can look outside. I love how Austin was so into his owl :)

Refashioned Friday

So Fridays are officially Refashioned Fridays. Every Friday me and my partner in crime, melissa west(by the way check out her blog and website), will be refashioning our clothes. No patterns. Just our wicked imagination and desire to reuse:). So these are our first batch of clothes we refashioned. I will include the steps we took and pics. The deal we have is that we will wear them all day Friday no matter what the outcome is. We would love to hear your thoughts. (by the way this is our first tutorial sort of speak so bare with us as we learn). Drum roll please..................
supplies:

1- old Guess shirt that I no longer fit into because well I GOT MILK!!
1-scissors
1-yellow thread

Directions:
1. I cut the top off wear your boobs are supposed to fit. VIOLA YOU HAVE A SKIRT!
2. I took part of the triangle from the top and sewed on the skirt to make a pretend pocket.
3. Cut the rest of the top length wise to make scraps and sewed them together to make a headband.

VIOLA!! HERE I AM! lol. please keep in mind it was 11:00 at night when the picture was taken.

ok now for Melissa's refashion (her's is super cute).

Supplies
One yellow shirt from honeymoon in Ireland. I love this shirt but it shrunk so is was like a suction cup!
One boring green shirt that I never wore
One pair of cut happy scissors
One crazy zigzag stitch in green thread
One Sharpie to cover up the size

Before:
1. Cut stripes from yellow shirt -saved tag
2. Arranged yellow pieces on green shirt, and arranged again, and again, and again...
3. Used marker to over size on tag
4. Pinned pieces into place and sewed in totally random lines. I turned the shirt on a whim and randomly back-stitched. Note: careful not to go through both layers of the shirt - duh!)

Result - Funky refashioned shirt. Not bad for the first time! (refashion4)
